Right to health

Right to health

What is the CRC?

The child is entitled to the best possible health and medical facilities. The government ensures that no child is denied access to these services. Extra attention is given to the reduction of infant and child mortality, health care, adequate food and clean drinking water, care for mothers before and after childbirth and for information on health, nutrition, breastfeeding and hygiene. The government ensures that traditional habits that are harmful to the health of children be abolished.

Explanation of this child right

Entitled to assistance if you are sick
If you are ill, or you have experienced something bad, so you're confused, you are entitled to support. Your parents or guardians must ensure that you get that help. The government should make sure that there are plenty of good doctors and hospitals. In the Netherlands, that is quite well organized. Unfortunately, there are millions of children in developing countries die from diseases that could have been prevented if the children had been vaccinated. Richer countries like the Netherlands should help sort the CRC for children to be anywhere in the world not to needlessly die or get sick.

When you decide it about medical treatment?
Because your parents are responsible for you, they decide what is good for your health. From twelve years you have the right to participate in decisions about your medical treatment. That can be tough. For example, a fifteen-year-old pregnant girl who wants an abortion or for a terminally ill child of thirteen years that is to stop the dark life-sustaining treatment. It is not only the right to physical health as well as psychological help.

Protection from harmful traditional practices
In some African countries, it is a tradition to circumcise girls. There are several forms, but the most severe form is that a part of the vagina is cut and sewn up until a small hole remains to urinate through it. It does quite a pain for the girls because it is done without anesthesia and is often ignited. Some girls go even to death. According to the CRC, governments must do everything to stop this harmful tradition.

'Illegal' children get less health care
In the Netherlands (and also in other countries) have kids who are illegal not have the same health care as on illegal 'children. Special rules apply because they have no health insurance. Officially, they are entitled to the same healthcare. But through all the complicated rules often fail to get proper care. According to the CRC have ALL children are entitled to good health and health care! Netherlands should there also to keep!
